visited this beautiful rose garden in Timaru today…

these roses are all heritage roses collected over a lifetime by Trevor Griffiths, for example this one is listed a Polyantha, Archiduc Charles from 1846!

While the roses are beautiful, the most stunning visual feast to me was the colour pallet of the fallen leaves

Shodo2k1401

Just got back from a SUPER busy 3 day weekend:
first to Shodoshima where the above photo was taken. Finished installing exhibition at MeiPam2, attended opening & made a speech about sound, time, collaborating with nature & making new works.. then visited beach in photo, then to Haikyo Peacock Farm, then very slightly dinged our rental car while getting lost trying to find an infamous cafe, met at least six super helpful policemen who provided help & verified incident for insurance purposes, then caught ferry to Mitzushima Port, went for tour of very large scale ship factory (handy fact: it takes 2.5 years to make a ship!) then recorded some seriously beautiful ambiences aka spatial clang fest, from exterior perimeter of ship factory… then a couple of chemical factory ambiences & then drove 3 hours back to Osaka – love those expressways, so many tunnels!!

Food. drinks. sleep. in that order…. more photos/sounds to come..

Osaka_Go_ws_x1600

Yesterday I tried to find this location, in the Shinsekai area of Osaka – I even had a reference photo & resorted to showing it to a local who gave me directions… but to no avail, I was there at midday & the place was closed with curtains drawn… So today I went back in the early evening & success!

First attempt I used my 5D and the Distagon lens – prefocused so I could shoot rapidly without annoying anyone, and got maybe 3 or 4 shots off when one of the guys in the green top noticed me – I gave him a thumbs up & he smiled, so I shot a few more & wandered off… Then swapped to my x100s and came back for another pass, to discover he had sent one of the other guys out to clean the windows! I shot a few more in wide and then went right up to the window & shot a few close up, before disappearing again… As much as I want to try capturing people more, I really don’t want to annoy anyone, so I greatly appreciated the gentle acknowledgement & toothy grin – ‘its ok…’

Osaka_Go_cu_x1600

I LOVE the drama in this closer shot – check out the concentration, the stages each pair are at in their game… I don’t even know how to play Go, but if I lived in Osaka I think I would learn just so I could hang out in a space like this!

Click either photo for a large version…

Below is from the same area – Osakas great retro sky tower, apparently the original Tsutenkaku Tower was built in 1912 & had a height of 64 meters, which was the tallest structure in the Orient at the time. The current Tsutenkaku Tower was built in 1956 with a height of 103 meters…

Do you remember your first camera? I’d imagine for many people these days their first camera might actually be their phone… I bought my first camera on my first trip to Japan, back in 2004 and as I’ve been hunting through my photo archives for a family project, I rediscovered that first bunch of photos & thought I’d post a few. From memory the camera was a tiny Sony point & shoot, pocket size so I tended to have it with me all of the time…

the same shot, in fact this is the actual/original shot – previous version was processed with Nik Silver EFX,
but somehow the restricted monochrome pallete is (for me) far more interesting, more evocative…
& more intriguing… in monochrome its like every element of the grid has a story to tell

Mana Island shot March 14th with Canon 5DmkIII and EF 100-400L lens

I have a theory that the best time to shoot timelapse is either just before or just after a storm, as the sunrise or sunset tends to be spectacular! This photo was taken at sunset a day or so before Cyclone Lusa arrives…
I first developed this theory when I was on Shodoshima, in the Seto Inland Sea of Japan. I had just arrived and was itching to get out & shoot some timelapses, but there wasn’t a single cloud in the sky!! After four or five days I started to wonder if there were ever clouds in that area at that time of year. Then the news mentioned a cyclone was coming and the evening before it arrived, the sunset was spectacular. The following day the sky was full of deep grey clouds but as soon as the storm passed, the dawn the next morning was also very beautiful… Golden hour became spectrally psychedelic!
