great detritus tim – particularly the eno article and the ideas article: how do you collate your ideas tim? my method’s a bit of a hotchpotch of magazine articles and printouts ripped out and filed, notebooks and delicious bookmarks and screen snapshots filed in a folder. Bit of a mess! But i think it’s important to retain the spontaneity of it and not let a creative exercise be turned into yet another housekeeping task otherwise it becomes self-defeating.
Very true Michael – collecting ideas is about capturing inspiration for later reference, so the means must be instant… because ideas can be fleeting!
I rely on a combination of Moleskin notebooks (full of quotes, doodles, URLs, ideas)
and Voodoo Pad pro documents (stored in my Dropbox & instantly synced to home studio, laptop & work studio)
WIth Voodoo Pad i have a master document that opens with currently 27 seperate pages, one for each individual project, plus seperate pages for ideas (stored chronologically) for: text ideas, visual references, web development etc
My Voodoo Pad master document is packed with over a years info but is still only 77MB, so it updates pretty quickly to each computer… Its been crucial for letting me develop multiple projects & yet still keep tagging each relevant element of the incoming stream of data to its project…. I just couldn’t keep all this stuff focused in my head & it was a major problem until I discovered the combination of Voodoo Pad and Dropbox….

But nothing beats a Moleskin & a good pen, good music on the ipod & a trip on the Shinkansen!
Great idea – this seems like exacly what i need! I checked out sidenote a while back when you mentioned it which is cool, but the lack of sync to my home computer, laptop, etc. kind of rendered it unusable for me as a definitive notes journal. (Handy in a stickies kind of way for notes that are specific to that computer location though but neater than stickies i think)
I totally agree about the moleskins too. Still the best way to put down creative ideas i think, perhaps coz simplest, most tactile interface? Don’t know but somehow I always find flicking through a notebook of notes and drawings more inviting/inspiring than clicking my way through documents.
