> I needed this recently when working out how to shoot stop motion to a tempo – an online calculator for Time, Midi and Sample Delay! I’ve also been trying this free Music Maths app

> Merging your iPad and your typewriter (thanks Tom!) – I would have laughed this off but I recently saw some great archival footage of one of New Zealands great (sadly deceased) historians, writing using a typewriter and I was transfixed watching & hearing the rhythm of his thoughts being converted to words via his typewriter…

> I’ve always been a chronic pen-tapper – its where some of my best beats come from – but I caught myself the other day thinking: ‘what tempo am I tapping at?” Lo & behold, there’s an iPhone app for that! Beat Detektor listens & tells you (works great on iPad – I was just tapping now at 141bpm!)

NKD: Are sound patterns recognized innately, or are they learned?

NMW: Neurons learn to prioritize some sounds. When a tone becomes important–because it signals food, for instance–the cells’ response to that tone increases. This finding revolutionized thinking about brain organization by showing that learning is not a “higher” brain function but rather one that occurs in the sensory systems themselves.

Re: the online calculator – sounds like a very good idea, slightly more accurate than my last rather hurried stop motion + children effort which was based on thinking about how far away the tempo seemed from 120bpm, and adjusting the frame rate afterwards up or down a bit…

its tricky stuff – to find a BPM that sits with my natural tempo but is also happily divisible by frame rate 23.976/24/25….

i made a spreadsheet to try & work out best case scenario…
so far i’m most liking: 125bpm
      = 3 frames per 1/4 beat at 25fps

damn, I just started to build something simular to the solar boxes=(. i hate the internet: you think, that you got a good idea, but there`s always someone who had the same idea before ….=)

    Hi Tim

You have a typo in the link to the iPad typwriter
    http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/06/usb-typewriter-turns-ipad-into-paper/%3Cbr%20/%3E

The /%3Cbr%20/%3E translates to if you mouse over it. You end up with a 404 not found.

    Regards
    John
