I was very happy to be asked recently to do a remix for renowned NZ classical composer John Psathas and its the second time I have had the pleasure of being given a free reign to mess with the tonalities of such a unique composer… This time John is releasing an album of new compositions for percussion and tape, and as the release party is tonight I figure its safe to post this & to also reccomend you check out the excellent NZ record label RATTLE RECORDS who are releasing it (its a site that uses autoplay on every page, so check your monitor level before you go visit)
Apart from Johns work I also highly reccomend you explore the work of Hirini Melbourne (RIP) and Richard Nunns who between them set about preserving & continuing the tradition of indigenous Maori music, and I warn you both the wind instruments and percussion are breath takingly beautiful! Also of note Rattle commissioned a remix album of Hirini & Richards debut album and it is well worth a listen
But back to Johns remix, below is my re-interpretation. As I had a short time frame for the project I decided I would restrict myself to only using & manipulating material from the stems of the original – no new material or overdubs. I’m not sure when the album is available from the Rattle site but when it is I’ll update this post with a link to the the original version for reference…

Thanks John & congrats on the new album! I would be at the release party to help celebrate but I am off to Auckland at dawn to record a number of location ambiences, vehicles & for the penultimate shifter kart recording session on Saturday….
(actually I tell a lie – I did overlay some temple bells & chanting @0.40 that I recorded in a Zen temple in Kyoto)

Someone emailed & asked what I used to make the video
so heres my reply:
….its just a video screen capture of a ProTools spectrum analyser plugin…
the PT plugin is by Elemental Audio & is called Inspector XL
http://www.macmusic.org/software/man.php/lang/en/id/2976
but it seems the company has disappeared…
Anyway there are other spectrum analyser plugins you could use….
& you could do it in any music/audio app…
To do the screen capture I used SnapzPro on Mac
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/snapzprox/
So using SnapzPro I just drew a rectangle around the plugin display
(I set aspect ratio to 2.35 as i like widescreen
& captured the onscreen display to a quicktime movie at 24fps
Then I reimported the captured video into ProTools, synced it up
to the sound & output a quicktime movie with image & sound….
The screen capture isn’t perfect, which is why there is a little
jerkiness in its movement… I tried slower frame rates & it
seemed worse…..
