Scattered Light 005

Shot on 12th July 2004 at the old Soundworks studio in Waima St, Auckland that I first worked at after FilmSchool.. Is anyone reading this old enough to have cut sound on 35mm sep mag? I love hearing stories from local film sound veteran genius Kitt Rollings about scraping the mag off to create fade ins/outs and using a head demagnetizer to create volume variations…

I never used sep mag – my first year as a trainee sound effects editor back in 2001 coincided with the arrival of Digidesign Sound Tools.. but I have a recording of a Westrex in my library, that gorgeous heavy duty clunk starting is a sound I’ve used plenty of times – anyone got access to a full Westrex film chain? For nostalgia if nothing else it would be great to have a nice high rez recording of a single machine and a full ensemble…

These photos don’t show the scale but this had three playback units in a rack that must have been 8ft tall…
