Sulphur City

You tend to smell Rotorua before you arrive there, it is a very active geothermal area & a very popular tourist destination all of which makes it difficult to photograph, especially after repeated visits… So this time as we wandered around Wai O Tapu I slowly became more interested in how plants survive (or don’t) in such a sulphourous environment… Some parts of the scenic walk feel a little like a lunar landscape, so with those two conflicting ideas I switched to monochrome & shot these…

I well remembered from my last visit that the final spectacle was surreal, but with a new attitude wondered how it would appear in monochrome – would that deeply strange green soup contrast as I imagined it would?
