Tech updates

I’ve got a bunch of dubby tunes I want to start mixing soon & almost have my analog mix room setup so I figured it was time to get my dub trio lined up & new tape loops fitted…

I still had 3 new (but very old stock) tape loops so I dropped them off with the 201s and 555 to my tech genius, but a few days later he said the machines were lined up & functioning beautifully but the tape loops had an audible drop in signal at the splice point… So my next call was to EchoFix to order some of their new loops

This morning my new mic arrived, the Sennhesier MD421 mkII above. A decade or two ago when I used to do a bit of live mixing I loved these mics on toms, but have also occasionally borrowed one for recording loud sounds. Two of the three next HISSandaROAR libraries involve very loud sounds hence finally feeling motivated to own a better dynamic mic…

No its not my Nagra SN – I do plan to use my Nagra 4.2 on some of the new libraries, but this photo is a screen grab. I’ve started watching the original UK series of House of Cards, it is brilliant & while the recent Netflix remake was great it suddenly does not seem half as clever as I originally thought it was, give that the blueprint was created in the original series (even the asides to camera were in the original series)
Despite the fact that the original series screened in the UK in 1990, I keep thinking I am watching some genius retro remake of the US series, with truly immaculate art direction – the haircuts & clothes are hilarious! But the tech is great: think computers with monochrome screens and when it comes to a bit of espionage, the Nagra SN appears in episode 2. It appears the entire original UK series is on youtube here

Onwards!
