When I moved into my house the first trees I planted were two kowhai (great for attracting native birds) and a crab apple tree. I’m not 100% sure why crab apple, maybe because I like the name… but for some reason it has been a very slow growing tree – after 5 years it is about up to my waist…. But this year for the first time, it actually has crab apples on it!
It has maybe a dozen little crab apples on it, and they are tiny!
Cork for scale:
So this weekend one of my missions is to make crab apple jelly which apparently “can be enjoyed on homemade bread, swirled into yogurt or paired with roast pork”
mmmmmmm….
