Nothing annoys me more than software developers who persistently want to distract your focus with goddamn notifications!
Now its software right, it should not be a problem because software has settings and if you tell an app NO THANKS I PERMANENTLY DO NOT WANT THIS it should remember it, and not ask you again.
As if…
Name & shame 1: Adobe Creative Cloud
I get really tired of Adobe updating their apps all the time as it often messes up my preferences, screen layout & current projects… So I DO NOT WANT Adobe Creative Cloud app running all the time, constantly checking on updates & showing notifications. But EVERYTIME I quit it, it doesn’t quit, it displays this same goddamn message. I DO NOT WANT TO HIDE IT. I specifically selected Quit, so QUIT!
Name & shame 2: WHATSAPP
My family use Whatsapp to keep in touch. I only tend to check it once a day, but sure enough when I open it on my phone it tries to tell me that I really need to have notifications switched on. WHY? I already said NO dozens of times… WHY DO YOU NOT LEARN!?
Name & shame 3: Websites & Safari
I don’t EVER want Notifications pushed at me from any website, ever.
There should be a permanent setting: NO NOTIFICATIONS EVER!
Name & shame 4: Black Friday/Cyber Monday is not a thing in my country. So any company who sends me multiple emails about it now has one less subscriber. As an example one company whos products I use (Woocommerce) sent me 4 emails in 4 days, plus targeted FB ads… Guess what? Now that I have unsubscribed I will never resubscribe. So I really hope all those emails were worth it for you. Ditto for the ‘extended by popular demand’ sales that seemed to follow the BF/CM nonsense… Unpopular demand more like it.
Sorry to rant, but while social media and phones are often blamed for the downfall of civil society I really have to wonder what all these companies think they are doing, other than DISTRACTING US.
I used to laugh at people who very seriously told me that their DAW is not connected to the internet, for reasons… Back then I thought ah its just email & the web and you can quit your email app and web browser.
Now it feels more like they declared war: “WE ARE MORE IMPORTANT than whatever you think you’re doing right now! PAY ATTENTION!”
No, thanks
I disabled all the notifications in OSX for the same reason.
My new mantra: Eradicate distractions
