Uncle Len

While on my short road trip I visited the Govett Brewster Gallery aka The Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth. I have of course been to the Govett Brewster plenty of times before, but I hadn’t revisited it since it was rebuilt as the Len Lye Centre in 2015!

The exterior of the building in wrapped in highly reflective stainless steel, which warps your perception even when driving past!

The vertical scale is fantastic to experience, with gorgeous acoustics inside due to the combination of very smooth finish on the concrete walls, and the complexity of shape…

The main Len Lye installation is titled Sky Snakes and every half hour there is a performance

Beautiful harmonic motion varies over time, throwing dual shadows of each snake on to the ground building to a climax of motion as all of the snakes oscillate wildly!

    Hi there,
Thanks for the excellent write up of the Len Lye Centre. I just noticed you say ‘rebuilt as the Len Lye Centre’. That’s not correct. The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery is still there, the Len Lye Centre is an addition to the main gallery.
    Thanks,
    Charles
