▶ one of my ‘guilty pleasures’ is to trawl through the current “Top 100” of the UK and USA. Partly to hear whats popular within the bell curve. But also to hear what production & beats & hooky vocals/bass melodies are charting. Psycho anthromusicology for an alien species? Yes. About that.
There is one aspect I just cannot get used to!
I can usually make it through the UK top 100 without too much grimacing, but OMG if I switch to the US Billboard top 100 it has a completely unexpected effect:
country music!
In the top100? Whaaaaat?
The first time it happened I grimaced & moved on, but now it feels like hidden ordinances, waiting for me to step on them! Just finished a pass through them now & there would have been a dozen of utterly unlistenable yehaw cowboy music tunes…
Can sometimes pick them by the song title but one or two notes is all I need to flinch: ARG!! Instantly need some bleach for the ears, harsh noise, anything!
(Sorry but) how does the old joke go? “Theres only two types of music I cannot stand: country & western”
I guess it feels normal if you live in USA, but from here its like stumbling into a totally alien culture.
