Last week I bought a plugin – an emulation of the Distressor by Universal Audio. It is some outboard I would love to own & may one day but this was on sale with like 80% off at one of those reseller/promo sites, so it will suffice for now. They sold me a serial number and to activate I had to make an account at Universal Audio. OK… all good!

So the plugin installs and I authorise my iLOK. No problem & no complaints. I had a play with the plugin and like it. That should be the end of my current experiences with Universal Audio. I’m a happy contented new customer. Guess what happens next?

Universal Audio opted me into some automated sales funnel. The first email I thought ok, welcome to UA I guess…. But this morning, less than 24 hours after buying just one plugin there are another 3 emails from them. So I unsubscribe.

Well done UA. /sarcasm
I really hope that spammy email barrage works for you because you just lost the ability to ever email me again. But, I wonder if they are even aware of consequences of their spammy behaviour? So I reply to one of their emails. Auto reply. “This address is not monitored.”

I visit their site, looking for a contact email address. None exists. I ask their chatbot. No they don’t have an email address that I can contact.
But they can open a support ticket. I do not want support. I want to provide feedback on spammy marketing practices. So here I am doing it publicly.

Sadly I think this will become the default setting for many large companies, farming all support out to AI chatbots and making it impossible to directly contact a human. If nothing else, it is a reminder to support small plugin companies, run by humans. Not VC funded companies that treat you like a “purchase bot”

I went from a happy contented customer to resenting them.
In human terms I would consider that a marketing fail.
In economic terms I would consider their chatbot a false economy.

“They won’t remember what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel”
