This is the relatively new Wellington Airport Flight Tower which when it was being built made you wonder if someone didn’t have a plumb bob… According to the Design Statement PDF: “While the building has a very practical life and purpose, it still must, more than most other building types, offer a poetic response in its design, and…. the building should say something about the Wellington environment in which it stands. The concept of a building that leans into the prevailing winds follows these precepts… ”

And so we have an Airport Tower with a 15 degree lean. Good oh!
NZ Architecture is pretty conservative at the best of times so I guess we should be thankful for a fugly brutalist block on a 15 degree tilt, in a shopping mall carpark… But I wondered how Japanese architects might have approached this. And after randomly seeing the design of this cafe I had my answer:

While they obviously serve different purposes, the bold angles (15 degrees? pfftt!) & beautiful natural finish of the cafe leads me to believe NZ has a few centuries of architectural evolution still to occur…
