Wings of Desire – Documentary
There’s a great moment in Wings of Desire that simultaneously ties together a number of clever dialogue techniques in the same moment. As a technique, throughout the film, when we are experiencing the film from an angels perspective we hear the thoughts of each human that the angel is near. Without them speaking, we hear their inner monologue. And the angel presumably provides solace.
At a certain point through the film, the setting is a bar with a band playing. Its Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, at first playing The Carny and then taking a break… One of the angels is onstage, observing… and just as the band starts their next song, we hear Nick Caves inner monologue as he comes up to the mic, and its a brilliantly conceived moment – Nick Cave fighting a compulsion. Inner monologueue ‘One last song and it’s over. But I’m not going to tell you about a girl. I’m not going to tell you about a girl…’ Cut to the wide shot, he sings into the mic: ‘I want to tell you about a girl’
